Would Bangkok really sink?
December 11th, 2007 by eddyra on WorldBangkok is one of 13 large cities at risk of being swamped as sea levels rise in the coming decades, according to the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change held in Khun Samut Chin.
The cities include Dhaka in Bangladesh, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Jakarta in Indonesia, Shanghai and Tianjin in China, Mumbai and Kolkata in India, Tokyo and Osaka-Kobe in Japan, Lagos in Nigeria, Alexandria and Cairo in Egypt, Karachi in Pakistan, and New York and Los Angeles in the United States, according to studies by the United Nations and others.
“If the heart of Thailand is under water, everything will stop, we don’t have time to move our capital in the next 15 to 20 years. We have to protect our heart now, and it’s almost too late.” -
Smith Dharmasaroja,
chair of the government’s Committee of National Disaster Warning Administration.

The city is rumored to be sinking an average of 2 inches a year as it lies entirely on a swamp. Some reports says that the city is sinking as much as 4 inches a year, and this combined with the sea level rising will leave Bangkok under 50 cm to 100 cm of water by 2025.
Bye bye Bangkok..
