I went to Stonehenge (Salisbury, England) for the first time in June 1997. It rained a lot during our visit. Stonehenge is a truly ancient site, and I realized that where I was standing, someone else stood thousands of years ago.
No one knows exactly who placed them there or why. Most scientists believed that it dates from the time of the Druids, the first people that existed in England before the Roman conquest. Was Stonehenge designed as a place of sun worship, or as part of a huge astronomical calendar? No one knows.

Stonehenge was built in three stages from about 3000 to 1800 B.C. Why did they create, dismantle and rebuild this isolated site? It’s hard to say. The bluestones, which weighed four to five tons each, came from over 240 miles away. They had to be floated by raft then carried across land. How did they move these massive rocks many miles? Probably by dragging them on wooden sledges.

I didn’t know why did they place them far away from any community. It was really strange. There was nothing else standing around them, no other bulding, church or anything.
Stonehenge has fascinated thousands of people throughout the ages, even today people are still wondering about the origins of the mysterious Stonehenge. Historians are still unable to come to a solid theory of when, why, by whom, and how this rock structure was built.

Archaeologists surveying the land around Stonehenge have found evidence for at least two other stone monuments, including one that once stood at this site at Bulford, England, near the River Avon.
The finds hint that Stonehenge was just the central piece in an elaborate network of stone monuments, scientists say. – news from national geographic.
