How Many Lives Just for a Coat
March 28th, 2008 by eddyra on Sketsa120 nude activists stripped naked on January 22, 2007 in Barcelona city center to represent one of the more than 120 chinchillas it takes to make just one fur coat. The activists lay as if they were dead-sprawled across the ground behind signs asking, “How Many Lives Just for a Coat?”

The “die-in” was organized by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Europe and AnimaNaturalis. “I’ll gladly bare my skin if it will help save animals’ skins,” says one of the activists.

Have you ever seen a chinchilla? A tiny, cute animal living in South America from Bolivia to Chile in the Andes Mountains. Chinchilla actually means “little Chincha”.

The interest in chinchilla fur started in the 16th century as international trade. Chinchilla fur is prevalent because it has a soft texture. Because of even color across the board, people like to use it for lining large pieces of clothing or small pieces of clothing.
Approximately 120 chinchillas must be destroyed in order to make a coat because their skin is so small.
