Li Yongchun, 61, has been teaching at the school in Dasu village, Longjing region for over 25 years. The one child, one teacher school in China /Lu Feng

He explained: “At first, the school had more than 400 students, but in the ’90s, more and more families migrated from the mountain village to make a living outside, and there were just over 10 students left.

“In 2000, the city education bureau decided to shut down the school after the graduation of the last student. New kids can register and board at another school in nearby Sanhe town, which is a two-hour drive away.”

But the family of a third grader named Han Hongyang can’t afford the boarding fee, so she became the last remaining student.

“We have been like this for more than half a year. She is my only student, and I’m her only teacher,” says teacher Li.

Teacher Li teaches his student six subjects – Chinese, Mathematics, Korean, History, Geography and PE.

“During class breaks, we play badminton, ping pong and football, which is a bit hard for a 61-year-old,” says Li.

In another half a year, teacher Li is to retire, and the city education bureau says then it will send another teacher to take care of the only student till her graduation, reports City Evening Post.

A glory hole is used when a dam is at full capacity and water needs to be drained from the reservoir. This is the glory hole belonging to Monticello dam in California and it’s the largest in the world, its size enabling it to consume 14,400 cubic feet of water every second.

The hole can be seen at the top left of the photo above. If you were to jump in for some reason your slightly damp body would shoot out near the bottom of the dam.

Glory hole – Monticello dam

This is supposedly the largest man-made excavation on earth. Extraction began in 1863 and still continues today. The pit increasing in size constantly in its current state the hole is 3/4 mile deep and 2.5 miles wide.

Bingham Canyon Mine, Utah

Situated 60 miles off the mainland of Belize is this incredible ‘geographical phenomenon’ known as a Blue Hole. There are numerous blue holes around the world but none as stunning as this one.

At surface level the near perfectly circular hole is 1/4 mile wide, the depth in the middle reaching 145 metres. Obviously the hole is a huge hit with divers.

This place in Uzbekistan is called by locals “The Door to Hell”. It is situated near the small town of Darvaz. The story of this place lasts already for 35 years. Once the geologists were drilling for gas. Then suddenly during the drilling they have found an underground cavern, it was so big that all the drilling site with all the equipment and camps got deep deep under the ground.

None dared to go down there because the cavern was filled with gas. So they ignited it so that no poisonous gas could come out of the hole, and since then, it’s burning, already for 35 years without any pause.

Nobody knows how many tons of excellent gas has been burned for all those years but it just seems to be infinite there.

Guyana voting process

In the voting process, electors will be required to dip the first joint of their right index fingers in indelible ink. In the past, some persons had claimed to be able to completely wash off the indelible ink from their fingers. This will not be possible at the 2006 elections because the indelible ink to be used is of such improved strength that, no matter how hard one tries, one cannot completely wash it off.

Further, the wet ink on their finger tips will not be wiped off as has been the practice in past elections. Before electors are allowed to vote, their fingers will be examined for traces of indelible ink. If traces of indelible ink are found on an elector’s fingers, it will be presumed that he/she had already voted and will not be allowed to vote again. Subsequently, he/she will be subjected to questioning, and possibly, be arrested immediately.

Could we apply it in our country?

A leap year is a year in which an extra day is added to the calendar in order to synchronize it with the seasons. 2008 is a leap year, which means that it has 366 days instead of the usual 365 days that an ordinary year has. An extra day is added, February 29, which is called an intercalary day or a leap day.

Leap Year is announced by that last day of February that only appears every four years. Leap Year has been around for thousands of years. February usually has 28 days, but during Leap Year 29. Why is there a February 29th?

Julius Caesar first created Leap Year in 46 B.C. so that the calendar year would match the solar year. The solar year, or the amount of time it takes the earth to travel around the sun, is about 365.2422 days. The extra .2422 creates an entire extra day every four years.

Rules for Determining a Leap Year
Most years that can be divided evenly by 4 are leap years.
For example, 2008 divided by 4 = 502: Leap year..

Bangkok is one of 13 large cities at risk of being swamped as sea levels rise in the coming decades, according to the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change held in Khun Samut Chin.

The cities include Dhaka in Bangladesh, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Jakarta in Indonesia, Shanghai and Tianjin in China, Mumbai and Kolkata in India, Tokyo and Osaka-Kobe in Japan, Lagos in Nigeria, Alexandria and Cairo in Egypt, Karachi in Pakistan, and New York and Los Angeles in the United States, according to studies by the United Nations and others.

“If the heart of Thailand is under water, everything will stop, we don’t have time to move our capital in the next 15 to 20 years. We have to protect our heart now, and it’s almost too late.” –
Smith Dharmasaroja,
chair of the government’s Committee of National Disaster Warning Administration.

Full story

The city is rumored to be sinking an average of 2 inches a year as it lies entirely on a swamp. Some reports says that the city is sinking as much as 4 inches a year, and this combined with the sea level rising will leave Bangkok under 50 cm to 100 cm of water by 2025.

Bye bye Bangkok..
